BIOENERGETICS IN EXERCISE AND NUTRITION

OutcomesStudents develop a lifelong critical attitude towards popular beliefs and fads and scientific knowledge.
 
ContentThis unit describes and explains the mechanisms whereby the different fuels are used during physical activity. Students explore the mechanisms by which fuel utilisation is regulated and affected by exercise training and metabolic diseases. There is an introduction to several aspects of sports nutrition including carbohydrate, fat and protein nutrition for athletes. Molecular mechanisms of weight control, obesity and of the links between obesity and metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes are explained.
 
AssessmentThis comprises weekly short assignments and a large assignment (20 per cent) and a written examination comprised of a series of short answer questions (80 per cent).

Prerequisites: at least 12 points of level 2 human movement units
Advisable prior studyHMES2260 Exercise Physiology (formerly 310.260 Exercise Physiology 260) or foundation unit in physiology or biochemistry
